SIX CASTLES CYCLEWAY

Part of the National Cycle Route 44, the six castles cycleway runs through Shrewsbury, Bishops Castle, Ludlow, Craven Arms, Ludlow and Leominster. Ride through peaceful lanes and enjoy the beauty of the South Shropshire countryside.

Experience South Shropshire’s historic castles and the beautiful countryside surrounding them. Visit the historic towns of Bishops Castle, Craven Arms, Ludlow and Leominster, renowned for traditional shops, lively street markets, art and craft galleries and spectacular storybook castles.

 

Why is it called Six Castles Cycleway?
The route takes you past some of the historic castles that the area has to offer such as:

The Shrewsbury Castle, originally built by Roger de Montgomery in 1070, now houses the Shropshire Regimental Museum.

 

The ruins of Bishop's Castle of which only the mound now remains, is at the rear of the Castle Hotel. It was built by the bishops of Hereford in 1085-1100.

 

 

Stokesay Castle in Craven Arms is one of the finest and best preserved 13th century fortified manor houses in England.

 

 

 

The imposing ruins of the Ludlow Castle, which date back to the 11th century, are perched on a cliff top with panoramic views over the River Teme and the South Shropshire Hills.

 

 

The romantic ruins of Richard's Castle can be found on top of a hill to the north-east of the village of Richard's Castle next to the 12th century church of St Bartholomew.

 

 

Croft Castle is a 17th century stone quadrangular manor house set in the stunning countryside with panoramic views.

Route 44 is part of the award-winning National Cycle Network. The full route will ultimately run from Shrewsbury to Cinderford and is currently signed from Shrewsbury as far as the Herefordshire border where the route follows the National Byway as far as Leominster; the section of the route which runs through Shropshire is called the Six Castles Cycleway.
